Key Steps in Building an Equestrian Arena

The base is the most important part of the arena itself.

Construction of an equestrian arena begins with establishing a purpose, recognizing the disciplines that will utilize it, formulating a budget, designating a location and understanding the customers’ desires. These five goals are crucial to properly constructing or expanding an equestrian arena. The base is the most important part of the arena itself. Our team recommends installing a stone dust base to proper slope and elevation utilizing a laser guided system and rolling the installed base to ideal firmness. The footing selected, whether pre-blended or blended onsite, should be laser graded to a depth that is suitable to the riding discipline or desires of the customer. Our team utilizes low ground pressure laser grading machines that leave little to no impact on the base and can grade to within +/- 1/8″ within a 20 foot radius in any direction.

Laser Grading

Laser grading is an operation that establishes a level or specified slope across a surface. An uneven, inconsistent surface can promote puddling, holes, material build up in corners and edges, resulting in an uneven riding surface putting strain on the horse and rider. Our team and state of the art equipment can grade an arena base and footing to +/- 1/8″ on grade.

  • Precise & Accurate surfaces
  • Proper sloping for water runoff
  • Consistent & Even riding surface
  • Decreased injury risk for the horse and rider

Footings

The science of equestrian footings dives a little deeper than knowing the physical make up of what is in your footing, sand, rubber, fibers, etc. The biomechanics of a footing is the direct relation between how the footing performs under impact and reaction the horse endures during landing, loading, and puff-off. The integrity of your footing is dependent on the combined behavior and comfort of the horse and it’s rider. Selecting an ideal footing entails understanding the biomechanics of the riding discipline you wish to execute.
